Dominican Blue Amber is natural amber, the way it comes from the mines - without enhancement in any way.
For this reason, there will always be differences in reflection and intensity, sometimes clear, sometimes swirled and speckled,
sometimes with a strong blue or a beautiful greenish tone, sometimes clear and yellow, just with a hint of blue - but always fluorescent.
A renowned scientist, Prof. Dr. Mark R. Mayer
comments on how you can recognize fake or de-naturalized amber:
'First of all, beware of pieces that are too uniform or too perfect.
Amberization involves processes that result in imperfection in pieces, imperfections that often give amber its personality.
So, bubbles, plant debris, clouds, inner layers, cracks and fissures, insect parts, opacities,
swirls and stress lines are present to some degree in most pieces and can help verify authenticity. Beware, for example, of a necklace of perfectly
matched, transparent beads -- that would be most unlikely.'
But, by picking the right material, it is possible to keep a certain quality and a reasonable continuity throughout the work.
In spite of statements from some unreliable and unbiased sources of information, Dominican amber is not difficult to cut and polish at all. Handy and experienced craftsmen are
able to work miracles with this material. Just observe this hand crafted Chinese dragon with all the intrinsic details.
