At first, we did not think much of it.

It looked like a regular piece of brownish amber. Not even very pretty, although one side had been polished. But when we turned it around, the surprise was complete. The secrete of this piece is a shell, a snail house.

What makes it even more interesting is the fact that usually fossil inclusions are only preserved inside the amber. This piece has the snail house inside and out.

It eems that the resin had flown into it, after the former occupant had moved out or died and dried, or maybe the resin even suffocated the owner of the house.

It is also possible that the pressure of the resin cracked the shell, especial when it hardened during these past 20-30 million years,

It was found at the same place as the lizard we show, the La Toca mine not far from Santiago de los Caballeros.

The next specimen has a smaller snail.

The specimen you see here also holds 2 small spiders, a bee and an ant and probably more. It seems that it is part of one of those cemeteries you find sometimes, where a large drop of resin fell on the ground and covered whatever there was: moss, bark, leafs, twigs, insects and ... snails. The little piece is a small world by itself.

The following specimen has 3 snails in pink amber.

Number 2 and 3 are only parcial, number 3 has been covered diagonal to the amber flow.

But number 1 shows an interesting detail and we present a theory. The amber, after extruding from the tree and falling onto the ground where the snails got stuck, must have liquified again due to great heat.

The liquid amber filled the snail house and stayed yellow, whereas the rest of the amber changed color and turned pink. The snailhouse broke off, the amber stayed in in the form of the snail.

This specimen is for sale.
